Die geboue van die Paul Roos Gimnasium lê op ‘n deel van die historiese plaas Welgevallen. Sedert 2001 bemark die skool sy eie wyne onder dié naam – wyne wat onder toesig deur die skoliere sélf gemaak is.

The name Welgevallen
In 1689, the Dutch governor at the Cape of Good Hope gave a stretch of land to a prospective farmer, Steven Jantz Bothma, with the aim of producing and supplying fresh fruit and vegetables to the ships of the Dutch East Company, en route to India. Today, the school, as well as the cellar of the university, are situated on part of the original farm, named Welgevallen – loosely translated as “well received.”

Die plaas Welgevallen het ook ‘n besondere geskiedenis – die eerste kruising van Pinotage is in 1925 hier gemaak deur professor AJ Perold.

Die fondse wat deur die verkope gegenereer word, word gebruik om talentvolle seuns uit behoeftige omstandighede ‘n opvoeding by PRG te gee.

For the new range it was decided to select and blend a range of wines, produced by old boys of the school, to establish styles of wine that could hold their own at the top end of the wine market. This includes nearly 40 of the most esteemed wine estates in the Stellenbosch region.
